I count myself very lucky with the clients I seem to attract, they let me do what I do best and I’m given free rein to get on and shoot their wedding while they get on with enjoying their day. Even after almost 10 years of shooting weddings I’m always looking to improve what I provide and part of this is questioning frequently whether my approach is really giving clients what they are expecting. That questioning is what keeps me on my toes and committed to improving my craft.

Then I get an email like the one Anna and Stephen sent me earlier in the week and my mind is put at ease. For a while ..

For us, we could not have found a photographer more understanding, more talented and more in tune with his clients than you. On our very first meeting on our engagement shoot you managed to transform two insecure giggling wrecks in front of the camera into two people who felt completely at ease on their wedding day. This is due to your excellent sense of humour and your calm and professional manner. From our engagement shoot you completely ‘got us’ -the bride to be slightly insane and the groom who didn’t have a clue how to stand and what to do with his arm!

Your photographs of our day overwhelmed us and took our breath away. Our guests have even commented that they are the best wedding photographs that they have ever seen and we could not agree more.

You truly captured every aspect of our wedding and with each click the next photo was just as beautiful if not more beautiful than the previous one. Each photo encapsulated the essence of us as a couple and of our story from the initial morning anxiety to the the love, the laughter, the friendships, the joy and the whirlwind magic that we felt. We absolutely loved our day and that has been translated in all of your photographs.

Duncan, from the bottom of our hearts, we really cannot thank you enough. Thank you for coping with us on our engagement shoot, for dealing with an Italian mother and for holding your own against a bride who trusted you with her wedding dress whilst she was getting her make up done! Most importantly however, thank you for giving us photos that we will treasure for the rest of our lives. We feel it’s going to be an impossible task to choose just 100 of them!

Godwick Great Barn Wedding – Kate and Ben

Godwick Hall is a new venue for me, but with a familiar wedding coordinator – Miranda is bride whose wedding I photographed a few years ago now. Thanks for putting Kate and Ben in touch !

I began with Kate and the girls who were getting ready in the fantastic accommodation at Godwick Hall, just a stones throw from the barn itself. It was then over to the barn to catch the guests arriving and enjoying afternoon tea. It was a chilly start to June, but Kate and Ben decided to brave the elements and hold their ceremony outside with the guests seated on straw bales. The weather played ball, and after a sunny ceremony it was inside to conclude the legal bits. A quick run through the confetti and then off to the ruined church tower for some family and couple photos. The guests enjoyed the garden games until it was time to sit down in the barn for speeches, the wedding breakfast and then dancing the night away to a great band. A great summer wedding !

A Highland Wedding – Katie and Greg

Something a bit different, my first Highland wedding and my first in a yurt – Katie and Greg were married in Achmore, a tiny village on the west coast of Scotland. They held their humanist ceremony in the yurts which had been erected on the village green, I’ve shot a couple of humanist ceremonies before and their celebrant really made theirs come to life, lots of laughter in the yurt. I really like the way the rings were passed around all their guests before handed back to the best man.

After the ceremony, we drove down to Loch Carron nearby, a beautiful spot for Katie and Greg to have some couple shots together.

Back to the yurts for the wedding breakfast and then a ceilidh into the night. Congrats Katie and Greg !

PS Thanks to Lynne for lending us your house for our holiday, and then putting us in touch with Katie and Greg. And to the talented Mrs Kerridge for shooting the wedding with me, Suzanne started with Katie and the girls in the morning, while I was with Greg, then we joined forces to take far, far too many photos of the rest of the wedding.

Houghton Revisited, a Norfolk Art Exhibition

A break from the norm last week, Suzanne and I were asked to cover the opening of the new exhibition at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. A collection of paintings once collected by Sir Robert Walpole, then sold to Catherine the Great has been reassembled in Houghton Hall in conjunction with St. Petersburg’s Hermatige Museum. We were asked to photograph the setting and guests and record the dinner and speeches in the evening, an amazing event.

Suzanne returned to Houton the next day to cover the arrival of a rather special Royal visitor : Prince Charles at Houghton

Gaynes Park Photographer – Anna and Stephen’s Wedding

I was really looking forward to seeing Anna and Stephen again, we’d had a fun engagement shoot in Cambridge a couple of months ago and I knew their Gaynes Park wedding would be great fun. I turned up a little early so filled my time with a bit of a wander round to get some detail shots and then presented myself at the Apple Loft to say hello to the girls … no-one there. It turned out the M25 had been shut that morning and everyone was having to detour around it. 20 minutes later Anna arrived, to her credit not as stressed by the traffic as she could have been – on with the preparations. Anna and Steve had a few suprises in store for each other before the ceremony – Anna had made a welcome sign displayed at the entrance of the Orangery and Steve had left another little message for Anna in the gardens for her to find as she walked to the ceremony. Add to that a ‘bride’s selection’ of sweets and some crockery that Anna had set her heart on and Steve had built up quite the collection of brownie points before the wedding even started !

Anna walked up the aisle on her fathers arm and into the Orangery for the ceremony and left on Steve’s, where a cup of tea was waiting for him in favour of champagne … apparently Gaynes Park got through three tea urns at their wedding, where normally one would do ! Everyone enjoyed the afternoon sunshine in the gardens and we snuck away for a few shots alone before their wedding breakfast in the Gather Barn.

Elms Barn Wedding Photography – Rosie and Adam (.. and Dexter)

I had to include Rosie and Adam’s gorgeous son Dexter in the title as he played a huge (and incredibly calm !) part in the day, right down to his own baby-sized tuxedo ..

I started with Rosie and the bridesmaids – all seven of them, I certainly wasn’t short of photo opportunities. Then a quick hop over to the barn to meet the Adam and the boys … another seven to keep the balance. Rosie arrived and it was into the very emotional ceremony, more than a few tears all round, I might have had to gulp back a few myself. It looks like spring is here to stay so we were able to enjoy the grounds of Elms Barn for a few drinks and then into the barn proper for their wedding breakfast, speeches and dancing.

Town Hall Hotel Wedding – Jo and Enrique

It felt like the first day of spring en route to Jo and Enrique’s London wedding, blue skies and long forgotten warmth !

Town Hall Hotel was looking fantastic as it always does so after a few shots around the place it was off to see Jo and two of her four sisters. Shall we say tensions were running a little high thanks to some missing flowers, an off-spec cake and a groom with a, err, relaxed schedule …

Enrique finally arrived by cab (in good time to be fair) and it was into the stunning ceremony room. The rest of the day went without a hitch and with a few surprises during the speeches.

Cley Mill Wedding Photography – Kim and Trevor

Blue skies … can be deceiving ! I drove through a snow shower on my way to North Norfolk last week for Kim and Trevor’s Cley Mill wedding and the arctic easterly wind kept us inside for much of the day.

But Cley Mill was warm and cosy for their intimate family wedding and Kim and Trevor were determined to brave the elements and have a few shots taken outside, even if it meant sacrificing the hairdresser’s hard work !

Engagement Photography – Anna and Steve

‘I hate having my photo taken’ is a phrase I hear often from my clients. Very often !

Anna and Steve were no exception, the first couple of minutes after I met them in a chilly Cambridge were spent telling me quite how much they disliked it …

I said what I’ve realised I say to pretty much everyone in pretty much any situation – ‘you’ll be fine’. And they were. We took a leisurely stroll around the streets of Cambridge and the colleges and not only did they get over their fear of the camera, they did it very much in public. Looking forward to seeing you again at your wedding in May guys !

Hintlesham Hall Wedding Photography – Anja and Adam

A disctinctly European flavour to Saturday’s Hintlesham Hall wedding with Dutch and British family and friends coming together for Anja and Adam’s big day.

I started with Adam and the boys, but as someone had left it until absolutely the last minute to write his speech I quickly wandered off to the other wing of Hintlesham Hall to see what the girls were up to. Back to the boys for the finishing touches, the same with the girls and then off to the ceremony. Afterwards we braved a few group photos in the crispy winter sunshine and then back into the warmth for drinks and the wedding breakfast.
